How are dating sites keeping you interested? A dating scam

Online dating is back in the news. This time, however, it’s for all the wrong reasons.

A Channel 4 investigation has uncovered a scam at Global Personals, one of the UK’s biggest online dating companies, that involved staff members making multiple fake profiles to trick customers into continuing to resubscribe.

In other words, customers were unwittingly engaging in fake email conversations with fake people that could run on for months, encouraging them to think they were on to something and renew their subscriptions.

According to Channel 4, Global Personals has 2.2 million customers, most of whom are users of smaller sites like the dating section of The Independent.

Channel 4 has been getting all 21st century with this story, tweeting about the issue this afternoon under  #datingscam. It has also been running a live Q&A with news producer Geoff White and correspondent Sarah Smith on hand to answer questions about the scam.
